Where it helps most
Multi-country routes, which are the norm here: Tbilisi to Yerevan by road, Almaty to Bishkek, a week in Tashkent and then Samarkand. Long stays, where you want data on arrival and a local option later if you settle. And mountains, where you would rather deal with signal than with paperwork.

Coverage, honestly
Cities are good, often 4G everywhere and 5G in the capitals. Mountain valleys in Georgia, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan lose signal regularly, and so do local SIM cards. The Kazakh steppe is long and empty between towns.
Nothing to register
A local prepaid SIM means finding a shop, standing in a queue and filling in a form, and the rules differ in every country on this list. A travel eSIM skips the errand entirely.
