Where this plan pays for itself
Road trips, because the route changes when someone spots a better beach. Ferry routes between Croatia, Albania and Italy. And the classic mistake: an EU phone contract that works fine in Croatia and Greece, then silently starts costing money the moment you enter Serbia or Bosnia.

Networks and coverage
You connect to local carriers in each country. Cities and the coast are solid 4G, often 5G. Mountain roads in Montenegro and northern Albania are thinner, and ferries lose signal in the middle of the crossing, which no eSIM fixes.
Nothing to register
A local prepaid SIM means finding a shop, standing in a queue and filling in a form, and the rules differ in every country on this list. A travel eSIM skips the errand entirely.
