Where it makes the most difference
The first hours in a new country, when you need a ride, a map and a way to tell someone you arrived. Overland routes through several countries, where a local SIM per border is a real cost in time. And work trips where the hotel wi-fi is the only alternative and you would rather not put your laptop on it.
Staying in one country for weeks? A local SIM can be cheaper per gigabyte once you are set up, and we would rather say so. For a week or a multi-country route, the regional plan wins on time alone.
Coverage, honestly
Cities and main roads are generally 4G. Rural coverage varies a lot between countries and can drop to 3G or nothing. Check the country list above before you count on data in a national park.
Nothing to register
A local prepaid SIM means finding a shop, standing in a queue and filling in a form, and the rules differ in every country on this list. A travel eSIM skips the errand entirely.
