TextNow Alternative: When a Free App Number Is Not Enough
People usually start searching for a TextNow alternative after something breaks: a verification code that never shows up, a free number that was taken back after a quiet month, or ads that got in the way once too often. Each of those has a different fix, and only one of them needs a different kind of number.
We sell eSIM plans with a mobile number, so treat the product section as ours to promote. The rest is how phone numbers are classified, which you can check with any lookup tool.
Why do people look for a TextNow alternative?
The three common reasons are failed verification codes, lost numbers after inactivity, and dependence on a data connection. Ads are the fourth, and the only one that a paid tier of the same app fixes.
- Codes that do not arrive. Banks, exchanges, payment apps and several large platforms decline to send codes to internet numbers, often without an error message.
- A number that disappears. Free app numbers are typically reclaimed after a period without use. Any account that relied on that number for recovery is then stuck.
- No connection, no line. On wifi or data the app works well. On a train, abroad without a data plan, or in a building with no wifi, nothing rings.
- Ads and limits. The free service is paid for by advertising, which is a fair trade until you rely on the app for work.
Is a TextNow number a VoIP number?
Yes, a TextNow number is an app number issued by an internet calling provider, and most number lookups return it as VoIP. That classification, not the app itself, is what decides whether a service sends you a code.
Number ranges are assigned to specific providers and published. When you type your number into a sign up form, the service can look it up in a second and see the line type and the provider behind it. Its policy then decides. A delivery app may accept it, while a bank on the same afternoon refuses the same number.
TextNow also sells a SIM card so its service can run on a cellular network. That changes how your calls travel, but the number is still a TextNow number, and whether a particular service accepts it still comes down to its lookup result. Check before you rely on it.
- The app on your screen is not what a bank looks at. It looks at the number range, and the range says where the number came from.
What are the free TextNow alternatives?
The free alternatives are other ad-supported or limited calling apps, such as Talkatone, TextFree and, for people in the US, Google Voice. They are good for calls and texts with people you know and weak for verification, for the same reason TextNow is.
- Talkatone and TextFree. Free US numbers inside an app, supported by ads, with inactivity rules similar to TextNow.
- Google Voice. Free for personal use in the US, ad-free, and it asks for an existing US number to set up. Its numbers are VoIP too.
- Paid privacy apps such as Hushed or Burner. No ads and easy to replace numbers, which suits disposable use. Still app numbers.
Switching between these moves you from one VoIP range to another. If the reason you are leaving is a rejected code, expect the same result.
A number on a mobile network
Cypher eSIM plans include a mobile number with calls and SMS both ways, plus data, on one eSIM. It does not live inside an app. No account, no email, no ID.
When is a mobile number the better TextNow alternative?
A mobile number is the better choice when the number has to receive codes for accounts you plan to keep, or has to work without internet. In both cases the deciding factor is the line type, and a SIM or eSIM number is classified as mobile.
- Accounts with money in them. Banks and exchanges tend to re-check your number when you log in from a new device, so a number that passed once can fail later if it is VoIP.
- Messenger accounts you care about. Messengers re-verify after a reinstall or a new phone, and losing the number at that moment means losing the account.
- Travel. SMS and calls on a mobile number travel over the network's signalling, so they arrive on one bar of signal without a data plan.
For casual calls, a free app is still the sensible answer. Paying for a mobile line to talk to friends you can already reach on a messenger is money better spent elsewhere.

Where Cypher eSIM fits as a TextNow alternative
Cypher eSIM fits when you want a mobile number for calls, SMS and codes, bought without an account or documents. It does not fit if you need a free line or a US number.
Our plans with a number run on a mobile network, with calls and SMS in both directions and mobile data on the same eSIM. At the time of writing, plans with a number start at $20.33. A typical example is the Europe+ plan: $37.38 for 20GB over 30 days with calls and 200 texts across 35 countries, carrying a French +33 number. Most European plans carry a +33 number, shown on the plan card before you pay.
There is no account, no email and no ID at checkout. The QR code installs in minutes, and payment is crypto only: USDT on TRC-20, BEP-20, Arbitrum or Solana, plus BTC, ETH, SOL, USDC, DAI, XMR and TON, with no Lightning. We bought and tested our own number before selling it, and calls connected both ways while SMS and verification codes arrived.
The limits, plainly. The number lasts as long as the plan. It is not a US number. No provider can promise that a particular bank or app accepts a particular number. And buying without KYC hides who bought the line, not what the phone does, because the handset still reports its IMEI to the network.
How do you test a TextNow alternative before relying on it?
Run three checks in the first hour: receive a real code, take a call with data switched off, and send an SMS out. A number that passes all three is ready for the accounts you care about.
- Request a code from a service you actually use. A test message from a friend proves very little about verification.
- Turn off wifi and mobile data, then call the number. If it rings, it is a mobile line. If it does not, it depends on the internet.
- Send an outgoing SMS. Some number products receive only. Find out before you need to reply to a driver or a host.
FAQ
What is the best free TextNow alternative?
Talkatone, TextFree and, in the US, Google Voice are the usual free options. They work well for calls and texts with people you know. They are app numbers too, so they do not solve verification problems.
Why is TextNow not receiving verification codes?
Usually because the service classifies TextNow numbers as VoIP and declines to send codes to them. It can also be rate limiting after several requests. A mobile number removes the VoIP objection, though no provider can promise any specific service will accept it.
Can I keep my TextNow number if I stop using the app?
Free app numbers are typically reclaimed after a period of inactivity, so a number you stop using is likely to be reassigned. Move important accounts to a new number before letting the old one lapse.
Is Cypher eSIM free like TextNow?
No. It is a paid mobile plan with data, calls and SMS. At the time of writing, plans with a number start at $20.33, and the Europe+ plan with a French +33 number is $37.38 for 20GB over 30 days.
Does Cypher eSIM offer US numbers?
Not as a working option at the moment. Most of our European plans carry a French +33 number. If a service insists on a US number, a prepaid SIM from a US carrier is the direct route.
