Google Voice Alternative: Free Apps, SIMs and eSIM Numbers
Searching for a Google Voice alternative usually starts with a failed verification code. Google Voice is a good free calling app for people in the US, but its numbers live inside Google's software, and a growing list of services refuses to treat them as real phone numbers.
We sell eSIM plans with a mobile number, so read the product sections with that in mind. Everything about how numbers are classified can be checked with any public number lookup tool.
Why do people look for a Google Voice alternative?
People replace Google Voice because the number gets rejected for verification, because the service is not offered where they live, or because they lost the number after a quiet period. Price is rarely the reason, since the personal version is free in the US.
- Verification failures. Banks, crypto exchanges, payment apps and some messengers refuse to send codes to Google Voice numbers, or accept them at sign up and refuse later.
- Availability. Personal Google Voice accounts are offered in the US, and setting one up asks for an existing US phone number. People abroad hit that wall first.
- Inactivity rules. Google says it can reclaim a number that goes unused for a few months. If an account recovery depends on that number, losing it is a serious problem.
- No internet, no phone. An app number rings only while the app has a working data or wifi connection.
Why are Google Voice numbers rejected for verification?
Google Voice numbers are rejected because they are VoIP numbers, and services can identify VoIP with a simple lookup. Number ranges are assigned to specific providers, so a bank or app checks your number, reads back the line type and applies its policy.
VoIP numbers are cheap to create in bulk, so many regulated services exclude them. The same Google Voice number can be accepted by a food delivery app and refused by a bank on the same day, because the two companies made different decisions about the same database result.
The part that hurts is timing. Plenty of services accept a VoIP number at sign up and then re-check it months later, when you log in from a new device. If the rules tightened in between, the code simply does not get sent.
- Switching from one app number to another app number changes the logo on your screen, not the answer a lookup gives back.
What free Google Voice alternatives exist?
The main free alternatives are ad-supported calling apps such as TextNow, Talkatone and TextFree, and all of them give you an app number rather than a mobile line. They are fine for calls and casual texting, and they usually fail in the same places Google Voice fails.
- What you get. A US or Canadian number inside an app, free calling and texting over wifi or data, and ads or usage limits that pay for it.
- What you give up. Free numbers are typically taken back after a period of inactivity, and support for codes from banks and large platforms is unreliable.
- Where they fit. A number for a marketplace listing, a callback number for a contractor, or a line you do not mind losing.
A mobile number, not an app line
Cypher eSIM plans include a mobile number with calls and SMS in both directions, plus data, on one eSIM. No account, no email, no ID. Crypto payment.
What paid alternatives are there?
Paid alternatives fall into four groups: privacy apps, business phone systems, prepaid SIMs from a carrier, and eSIM plans with a mobile number. Only the last two give you a number that lookups classify as mobile.
Paid privacy apps. Apps such as Hushed and Burner sell disposable numbers you can create and delete. They are built for separation, not verification, and they are still VoIP.
Business phone systems. Services such as RingCentral, Dialpad and Grasshopper add routing, voicemail, shared inboxes and several users. Excellent for a team answering calls, and still classified as VoIP by most lookups.
A prepaid SIM from a US carrier. If you need a US +1 mobile number specifically, this is the direct route. It usually has to be activated in the US and kept alive with a monthly plan, and it occupies a SIM slot or eSIM profile on your phone.
An eSIM plan with a mobile number. A real mobile line delivered as an eSIM, installed with a QR code. The number belongs to the country the plan is built on, which is not always the country you are in, so check that before paying.
Which Google Voice alternative fits which job?
Choose by what the number has to survive, not by monthly price. A number that only takes calls from friends has very different needs from a number that receives the code for your exchange account.
- Calls and texts with people you know: any free app number works, and Google Voice itself is still fine if you are in the US.
- A throwaway number for listings or sign ups: a paid privacy app, because deleting and replacing numbers is the point.
- A shared line for a small team: a business phone system, accepting that some verifications will need a different number.
- Verification codes for accounts you plan to keep: a mobile number on a SIM or eSIM, and if a service insists on a US number, a US carrier SIM.
Where Cypher eSIM fits, and where it does not
Cypher eSIM fits when you want a mobile number for calls, SMS and codes without handing over documents, and it does not fit when a service demands a US number. Our plans with a number run on a mobile network, not inside an app, and calls and SMS work in both directions alongside the data.
At the time of writing, plans with a number start at $20.33, and the Europe+ plan, which carries a French +33 number and covers 35 countries, is $37.38 for 20GB over 30 days with calls and 200 texts. Most European plans carry a French +33 number, and the number is shown on the plan card before you pay. Checkout needs no account, no email and no ID, the QR code installs in minutes, and payment is crypto only: USDT on TRC-20, BEP-20, Arbitrum or Solana, plus BTC, ETH, SOL, USDC, DAI, XMR and TON. There is no Lightning.
Before selling it, we bought our own number and used it: calls connected both ways, and SMS and verification codes arrived. The limits are real too. The number lasts as long as the plan. Our US number plans are not available at the moment, so it will not satisfy a service that only accepts +1. No provider can promise that a given bank or app accepts a given number. And a no-KYC purchase hides who bought the line, not what the phone does: the handset still reports its IMEI to the network.
How do you switch from Google Voice without losing accounts?
Add the new number to every important account first and remove the Google Voice number only after the new one has received a code. Doing it in the other order is how people lock themselves out.
- List the accounts tied to the old number. Banks, email, exchanges and messengers first, everything else after.
- Add the new number as a second method where possible. Trigger a test code and confirm it arrives before you change anything else.
- Keep the old number alive for a few weeks. Use it occasionally so it is not reclaimed while stragglers still point to it.
FAQ
What is the best Google Voice alternative?
It depends on the job. For free calling, another app number such as TextNow or Talkatone works. For verification codes on accounts you want to keep, a mobile number on a SIM or eSIM is the more dependable choice, because lookups classify it as mobile rather than VoIP.
Is there a free Google Voice alternative that passes verification?
Free alternatives are app numbers, so they are usually classified as VoIP and refused by the same services that refuse Google Voice. Some low-risk sites accept them. For banks and exchanges, plan on a mobile number.
Can I get a Google Voice number outside the US?
Personal Google Voice accounts are offered in the US and setting one up asks for an existing US number. People abroad usually need a different route, such as a mobile number on an eSIM.
Does Cypher eSIM give me a US number?
Not at the moment. Most of our European plans carry a French +33 number, and the number is shown on the plan card before payment. If a service accepts only US numbers, a prepaid SIM from a US carrier is the direct route.
Will a mobile number on eSIM work for every app?
No provider can promise that. A mobile number removes the VoIP objection, but each service applies its own rules about countries, reuse and risk. Test the codes you need before you move important accounts.
A mobile number that rings without data
