Telegram Without a Phone Number: What Is Actually Possible
Telegram has a reputation for privacy, so people are often surprised that creating an account starts with handing over a phone number. The reputation is not wrong, it is just about different things: what is in your chats, and what other users can see about you. Registration is a separate question.
We sell numbers, so weigh the product parts accordingly. Everything about Telegram below can be checked inside the app in a couple of minutes.
What people usually mean, and the quickest fix
Most people asking how to use Telegram without a phone number do not want an account with no number in existence. They want their number invisible to the stranger they are about to message, or to the group of four hundred people they just joined.
That is a settings problem, not a registration problem, and it is already solved in the app.
- Set a username. Then people can find and message you by the username, and they never see a number.
- Set phone number visibility to Nobody. Found in privacy settings. Contacts who already have your number in their address book will still match you, which is worth knowing, but nobody else sees it.
- Restrict who can find you by number. The second half of the same screen, and the one most people miss.
If that is all you needed, you are done and you can stop reading. If you need the number itself to not be yours, keep going.
The +888 numbers, described honestly
Telegram sells anonymous numbers starting with +888 through Fragment, its own marketplace, paid for in TON. The number is not tied to a carrier or a SIM, and it registers a Telegram account without any mobile operator being involved. It is a real product and it does what it says.
- It works for Telegram and nothing else. It is not a mobile line. Your bank cannot text it, nobody can call you on it, and no other service will verify you with it.
- It is an auction market. Prices move. Unremarkable numbers are routinely far more expensive than a month of mobile service, and the good ones go much higher.
- It needs a TON wallet. Buying means getting TON and using Fragment, which is a smaller obstacle than it was but still an obstacle.
- It is a strong answer to one narrow question. If the goal is specifically a Telegram account with no carrier anywhere in it, this is the cleanest route that exists.
- A +888 number is a Telegram key, not a phone number. That is the whole trade: it does one thing properly and nothing else at all.
Why free SMS pages are worse here than elsewhere
Public receivers fail on every service. On Telegram they fail faster, because Telegram frequently delivers the login code inside the app to a device already signed in on that number, rather than as a text.
- Someone else may already hold the account. Then the code goes to them, not to the public page, and you never see it.
- Everyone can read what does arrive. Including your code, and with it your account.
- The number recycles. When Telegram next asks you to confirm, on a new device or after a reinstall, there is nothing left to confirm with.
Set a cloud password in Telegram's two step verification regardless of which number you use. It is the one thing that stops somebody who gets hold of the number from simply walking into the account.
A second number that is yours alone
Cypher eSIM plans with a real mobile number receive the Telegram code, take calls and texts, and need no account, no email and no ID.
The second number approach
Register Telegram on a number that is genuinely yours but is not the number on your bank account, your main messenger and your documents. It is less clever than a +888 number and more useful, because the same line also works everywhere else.
At the time of writing, our plans with a number start at $14.84, the Europe plans are $37.38 for 20GB over 30 days with calls and 200 texts, and Global Lite is $56.07 across 66 countries. The European and global plans carry a French +33 number, written on the plan card before you pay. These are carrier numbers, not VoIP, so Telegram treats them as ordinary lines. No account, no email, no documents, the QR appears on the page, and payment is crypto: USDT on TRC-20, BEP-20, Arbitrum and Solana, plus BTC, ETH, SOL, USDC, DAI, XMR and TON. No Lightning.
The limit, stated plainly: the number lives as long as the plan, then returns to the pool. For an account you intend to keep, keep the plan running and set the cloud password, so that a future holder of the number cannot take the account. And a separate number does not hide the phone itself. The handset still reports its IMEI and its location to whatever network it joins, which is why we are careful about the words on our anonymous eSIM page.
No KYC is not the same as anonymous.
The network still sees the handset. We explain exactly what an anonymous eSIM does and does not hide, in plain words.
Pick by what you are protecting
- You just do not want strangers seeing your number: username plus privacy settings. Free, instant, no new number at all.
- You want a Telegram identity with no carrier involved: a +888 number from Fragment, as long as you accept it works only for Telegram.
- You want a second identity that also works for other services: a carrier number on an eSIM.
- You want the account to survive years: whichever number you choose, add the cloud password and keep control of the number.
FAQ
Can you create a Telegram account without a phone number?
Not with nothing at all. Registration always needs a number, but it does not have to be a carrier number: Telegram sells anonymous +888 numbers through Fragment, paid in TON, which register an account with no mobile operator involved. They do not work for anything other than Telegram.
How do I hide my phone number on Telegram?
Set a username so people can reach you without it, then set phone number visibility to Nobody in privacy settings, and restrict who can find you by number. Contacts who already have your number saved will still match you, which is the one gap in the setting.
Do I need a SIM in my phone for Telegram?
Only to receive the code at sign up, and not always even then. After that the account works on devices with no SIM, which is why Telegram runs fine on a tablet or desktop.
Are +888 numbers worth it?
If your single goal is a Telegram account with no carrier behind it, yes, it is the cleanest route available. If you also want to receive bank codes, take calls or verify other services, no, because it does none of those things.
Will a travel eSIM number work for Telegram?
Yes, when it is a carrier number rather than VoIP. Ours are carrier numbers. The limit is that the number lives as long as the plan, so set Telegram's cloud password and keep the plan alive for an account you want to hold.
