Skype Alternatives for Calling Real Phone Numbers
When people search for a Skype alternative, they are rarely asking for another video call app. Those are everywhere and free. They are asking about the other half of Skype: the part that let you dial a landline in another country for small change, and the part that gave you a number people could call you on.
Microsoft retired Skype on 5 May 2025 and pointed everyone at Teams. Teams covers the meetings. It does not cover a cheap inbound number, and new Skype Credit is no longer sold, so the old workaround is gone too.
Split the problem before you shop
Job one, talking to people who have the same app. Teams Free, Google Meet, Signal, WhatsApp and a dozen others do this at no cost and with better video than Skype had. Pick on taste.
Job two, dialling actual phone numbers. Calling a hotel, a clinic, a government office or a relative with no smartphone. Far fewer options, and all of them cost something.
Job three, being reachable on a number. An inbound line people can call, and that can receive verification codes. This is what Skype Number was, and the hardest to replace well.
Most comparison articles answer job one and quietly skip the other two. Sort out which you actually need and the shortlist gets much shorter.
For app to app calls
- Microsoft Teams Free. The official landing place, and the least friction if your contacts were pushed there too. Meetings, chat, screen sharing.
- Google Meet. Works in a browser with no install, which matters when the other person is not technical.
- Signal. Encrypted voice and video, no ads, no account to maintain beyond a number. Best choice when the conversation matters more than the features.
- WhatsApp. Not the best app, simply the one everybody already has, which for calling family is usually the deciding factor.
For calling real phone numbers
Here you are buying telephony, and there are three shapes of it.
Calling credit services. Apps that sell minutes to landlines and mobiles, the closest thing to old Skype Credit. They work, pricing varies a lot by destination, and you are trusting a balance to a company that may also decide to retire its product one day. Skype itself is the cautionary tale.
Cloud telephony and SIP providers. A proper VoIP line with an inbound number, usually monthly. Flexible, good for business use, and the number is identifiable as VoIP to anyone who checks, which matters for job three below.
A mobile plan with minutes. The least fashionable answer. It rings with no internet, it is not rejected by banks, and if you travel it also carries your data. Unexciting and extremely reliable.
- Skype shutting down was a reminder that a phone number living inside one company's product is a number you are renting from that company's roadmap.
The catch with the VoIP replacements
A VoIP number is cheap and instant, and it carries two limits that only show up later.
- Verification. Numbering ranges are published, so a bank, an exchange or a payment service can tell a VoIP line from a mobile line with a lookup, and many of them refuse VoIP outright. The refusal often comes months after sign up, when you log in from a new device.
- It needs internet to ring. No data, no call. On a train, in a basement, out of allowance, the number is simply not there. A mobile number rings on one bar, because calls and texts ride on signalling rather than on your data plan.
None of that makes VoIP a bad product. For a business line answered by several people, with routing and voicemail and opening hours, it is exactly right. It is the wrong tool only when the number has to pass a check or ring without a connection. We wrote the longer version in why non-VoIP numbers pass verification.
A number that rings without wifi
Cypher eSIM sells plans with a real mobile number for calls and texts both ways. No account, no email, no ID. Crypto payment.
The carrier number option
This is what we sell, so judge it accordingly. An eSIM plan that includes a real mobile number does the Skype Number job: people call you on an ordinary number, you call ordinary numbers back, and codes arrive by text.
At the time of writing, plans with a number start at $14.84, the Europe plans cost $37.38 for 20GB over 30 days with calls and 200 texts, and Global Lite is $56.07 and works across 66 countries. European and global plans carry a French +33 number, which appears on the plan card before you pay. Buying needs no account, no email and no documents, the QR appears on the page, and payment is crypto: USDT on TRC-20, BEP-20, Arbitrum and Solana, plus BTC, ETH, SOL, USDC, DAI, XMR and TON. No Lightning. Data plans cover 180+ countries from about $1.20 depending on destination.
Where this is the wrong answer. If you need an inbound number in one specific country so local clients can dial a local code, a regional plan will not give you that. If you want per minute international calling to many countries on a tight budget, a calling credit app is cheaper. And our number lives as long as the plan does, so it is not the place to anchor an account you want to keep for ten years.

Choosing in one pass
- Video calls with colleagues or family: Teams Free or Meet, no money involved.
- Occasional cheap calls to landlines abroad: a calling credit app, and do not park a large balance in it.
- A business line with routing and several people: cloud telephony, which is the proper tool for that job.
- A number that must pass bank and exchange checks: a carrier number, because VoIP is filtered on purpose.
- Travelling and wanting one thing that does data, calls and codes: an eSIM plan that includes a number.
FAQ
What happened to Skype?
Microsoft retired it on 5 May 2025 and directed users to Teams. The Skype apps stopped working, new Skype Credit is no longer sold and Skype Numbers are no longer offered. Remaining credit could be spent through the web dial pad rather than refunded, except in narrow cases.
What is the closest replacement for Skype?
It depends which part you used. Teams Free is the official replacement for calls and meetings. For dialling real phone numbers you need a calling credit app or a VoIP provider, and for an inbound number that passes verification you need a carrier number.
Is Teams a full replacement?
For meetings and chat, broadly yes. For cheap calls to ordinary phone numbers and for a personal inbound number, no, which is the gap most people are searching about.
Why do banks reject VoIP numbers?
Because numbering ranges are published and a lookup identifies the line as VoIP, and their policy excludes it. It is a database check rather than a judgement, so support cannot override it for you.
Can an eSIM replace a Skype Number?
For being reachable on a real number, yes, provided the plan includes a number rather than data only. It rings without internet and passes verification. It will not give you an inbound number in one specific country if you buy a regional plan.
