A Phone Number for Telegram Without Your Main SIM

People arrive at this search for two different reasons, and only one of them needs a purchase. Most want to stop handing their personal number to strangers in groups. A smaller group genuinely wants a separate identity. The first problem is solved in the settings menu in about forty seconds.

The two settings that solve it for most people

Telegram was built around the idea that your number is a signup credential rather than your public address. Two changes and nobody sees it.

• Set a username. People find and message you by that instead of by number, and you can hand it out in public without exposing anything else.
• Set phone number visibility to Nobody. In privacy settings. After that, even people who have you in their contacts do not see the number inside Telegram.

One honest caveat about the second setting. If somebody already has your number saved in their phone's address book, Telegram will still match you to that contact, because the matching happens on their device. Hiding the number stops new strangers from reading it, not past acquaintances from recognising you. For a lot of people that is enough and the search ends here.

What Telegram actually requires

A number that can receive a code once, by SMS or by an automated call. No identity document, no address, no card. After the first device is signed in, subsequent logins can be confirmed inside the app rather than by SMS, which is why people often forget the number is still the root of the account.

Telegram is more permissive than a bank about which numbers it accepts, and it still blocks ranges associated with mass registration. The mechanism behind that is the same lookup banks use, explained in our piece on non-VoIP numbers.

The three ways people lose a Telegram account

• A public inbox. Free SMS sites show incoming messages to anyone who opens the page. Somebody watching the number you just used can request a login code and walk into the account. This is not an edge case, it is the normal outcome, and it is why those numbers are free.
• A recycled number. Operators reclaim disconnected numbers and reissue them. If your account still points at a number that now belongs to a stranger, they can request a code and take it over, usually without meaning to.
• A number that simply ended. Travel plans expire, including ours. Your sessions keep working until the day you reinstall, change phone or get logged out, and then there is no way to receive the code. The account is not suspended, it is unreachable.

Notice that all three are about who can receive on the number, not about who bought it. That is the right way to think about this entire category.

Set the cloud password. This is the important part

Telegram's two step verification adds a password on top of the SMS code. With it enabled, possession of the number alone is not enough to enter the account, which removes the recycled number problem and most of the public inbox problem at the same time.

It takes a minute and almost nobody does it. If you only act on one sentence in this article, make it this one: turn on two step verification, store the password somewhere that is not the same phone, and add a recovery email you still control. Everything else here is about reducing risk at the edges. This fixes the middle.

If you do want a separate number

Legitimate reasons are easy to list: selling things to strangers, running a public channel without your personal line attached, keeping work contacts out of your evenings, or travelling and wanting a local line people can actually ring.

What works, in rough order of how durable it is. A prepaid SIM bought in a country that does not register them, which is cheap and permanent as long as you keep it topped up. A travel eSIM with a carrier number, which is instant and temporary. A privacy focused VoIP service, which is fine for Telegram specifically and will fail you at a bank. And Telegram's own anonymous numbers bought on its blockchain marketplace, which exist precisely so an account need not be tied to a carrier at all.

• Every way people lose a Telegram account comes down to the same thing: somebody else can receive on that number, and you cannot.

Before a temporary number expires

Telegram has a Change number function that moves the account, chats, groups and username to a different number while keeping everything. It works, it is free, and it only works while the old number is still receiving.

So the habit is simple. Note the expiry date when you buy. Two days before, move the account to a number you will still control. If you skip this, the account is stranded the next time Telegram asks for a code, and support cannot help because there is nothing to verify against.
