eSIM Not Working Abroad: Nine Fixes, in the Order They Actually Fail
The phrase my eSIM is not working covers about nine distinct problems, and they are not equally likely. Running through them in order takes five minutes and resolves the overwhelming majority without anybody's support team being involved.
1. Data roaming is off for the travel line
This is the big one. A travel eSIM connects to local networks as a visitor, which the phone classifies as roaming even though you are using a local plan and paying nothing extra. With roaming disabled for that profile, the phone attaches and then refuses to pass data.
Turn data roaming on for the travel line specifically, not for your home line. People hesitate here because roaming means expensive, and in this case it is simply the technical word for what a travel eSIM does.
2. The phone is still using your home line for data
Installing a profile does not make it the data line. Both lines sit there, and unless you say otherwise the phone keeps using whatever it used before. Set the travel eSIM as the line for mobile data, and switch your home line's data off entirely so nothing leaks back to it.
Related and sneaky: automatic data switching. Phones offer a feature that falls back to the other line when the current one looks weak. At home it is helpful. Abroad it quietly sends you back to your carrier at full roaming rates. Turn it off before you travel.
3. The profile is installed but not switched on
A profile can sit in the list inactive, especially if the phone hit its limit of simultaneously active lines when you installed it. Open the list of lines and check that the travel one is actually enabled, not merely present.
If the phone says you have too many active lines, that is the constraint rather than a fault. Switch something else off, with the caution that deleting a profile is permanent while disabling it is not.
4. It was installed in the wrong country
Single country plans activate on their own country's networks. Installed anywhere else, they will not connect, and no amount of toggling fixes it. A few are worse than that: our United Kingdom plan is blocked permanently if installed before you arrive, which is an operator rule rather than a setting.
Regional and global plans do not care where you install them, which is one of the better arguments for buying regional even when a single country plan would cover the trip.
5. The plan has not started or has finished
Validity on most plans begins at install rather than at first connection. Install a seven day plan a week before departure and it expires as you land. Check the start date and the remaining allowance before assuming anything is broken.
The other half of this is data exhaustion. A plan with its gigabytes used up behaves a lot like a plan that does not work: full signal, no internet, no error message that explains itself.

6. The phone is stuck on the wrong network
Your handset picks a local network automatically, and sometimes it picks one your plan does not have an arrangement with, then sits there showing bars and delivering nothing.
Switch network selection from automatic to manual, wait for the list of available operators, and choose a different one. If the plan's documentation names its partner networks, pick from those. This one fix resolves a surprising share of cases where everything else looks correct.
7. A restart has not actually happened
Unglamorous and genuinely effective. Toggle airplane mode on and off, and if that does nothing, restart the phone properly. Profile changes sometimes need a fresh attach to the network before they take effect, and a modern phone can go weeks without a real reboot.
Do this after each change rather than after all of them, or you will not know which fix worked and you will repeat the guesswork on the next trip.
8. The handset is carrier locked
A phone locked to an operator will refuse profiles from anyone else. People discover this at the worst moment because a locked phone behaves normally until you ask it to accept another network.
If the device came subsidised with a contract and has not been explicitly unlocked, that is a plausible cause. The unlock request goes to the original carrier, and it is not something a travel eSIM provider can do anything about.
9. Low data mode, restricted background data or a VPN
Battery savers, low data modes and per-app restrictions can throttle a new line into looking dead. So can a VPN configured before the trip that is now trying to reach a server through a connection that has not come up yet.
Turn the VPN off, confirm plain internet works, then turn it back on. Diagnosing two layers at once is how people conclude their eSIM is broken when their tunnel is the thing failing.
- Full signal and no internet is almost never a dead eSIM. It is usually a switch that was never flipped.
When it really is the eSIM
Occasionally the profile is faulty: it will not install on a compatible phone, or it installs and never attaches to any network anywhere. That is a defective product rather than a configuration problem, and at that point a provider should replace it rather than walk you through the list again.
On our side that means a replacement within 24 hours for a genuinely dead eSIM. What is not covered, and we say this on the product page too, is a single country plan installed in the wrong country or a plan bought for the wrong destination, because the operator issuing it will not take those back either. The mechanics behind that are in our guide to how eSIMs work.

Where Cypher eSIM stands
Briefly. We sell data eSIMs across 180+ countries starting around $1.20 depending on destination, and plans with a real number from $14.84 to $56.07 for a number working across 66 countries. No account, no email and no documents, with the QR code on the page and payment in USDT on TRC-20, BEP-20, Arbitrum or Solana, plus BTC, ETH, SOL, USDC, DAI, XMR and TON. Faulty eSIM replaced within 24 hours. Wrong country or early install on a single country plan is not refundable, which is the one rule worth reading twice before you buy.
FAQ
Why is my eSIM not working abroad?
Most often because data roaming is switched off for that profile. A travel eSIM connects to local networks as a visitor, so the phone treats it as roaming even though the plan is local and costs nothing extra. Enable roaming for the travel line, not the home one.
My eSIM shows signal but no internet. What now?
Check that the travel line is actually set as your data line, then switch network selection from automatic to manual and pick a different local operator. Phones sometimes attach to a network the plan has no arrangement with and sit there showing bars.
Can I install a travel eSIM before I fly?
Regional and global plans yes, single country plans no, because those activate on their own country's networks. Some are stricter still: our UK plan is blocked permanently if installed before arrival. Validity also usually starts at install rather than first use.
Does a carrier locked phone work with an eSIM?
No. A handset locked to an operator refuses profiles from anyone else, and it behaves normally until you try. The unlock has to come from the original carrier, and no eSIM provider can work around it.
When should I contact support instead of troubleshooting?
When the profile will not install on a compatible phone, or when it installs and attaches to no network at all after you have checked roaming, the data line and manual network selection. That is a defective eSIM rather than a setting, and it should be replaced rather than debugged.
Connected before you leave the airport.
